What Is A Capsule Wardrobe?

For a while now I've been seeing pins, blog posts, magazine articles, and more about capsule wardrobes. I kept wondering what is a capsule wardrobe ? In all the things I saw there were collages of a basic clothing pieces. But what is  it?

A quick google search revealed the idea of capsule wardrobe started in the 1970s by Susie Faux and is meant to be a collection of a few essential pieces that never go out of style and are accented by seasonal pieces.  Sounds easy and simple right?

In 2014 Un-Fancy  blogger, Caroline Rector, brought the capsule wardrobe idea to the forefront again along with taking it up a notch. She set out to pair her wardrobe down to 37 pieces for one season, challenging herself to not buy anything for 3-4 months until the next season.

She describes it as:
“a mini wardrobe made up of 37 really versatile pieces that you totally love to wear.”

Her ideas took fire and soon readers and bloggers alike were coming up with their own ideas of what a capsule wardrobe is.

Be More With Less describes it in three ways:
1. a collection of clothes and accessories that includes only items considered essential

2. A person’s basic collection of coordinating clothes that can be used to form the basis of outfits for all occasionsa set of clothing, normally around 24 items, which can be mixed and matched to create a wide variety of outfits.

3.  a set of clothing, normally around 24 items, which can be mixed and matched to create a wide variety of outfits.

Project 333 defines a capsule wardrobe as:
A small collection of 33 items including clothing, shoes and accessories built for use during a 3 month period of time.

Simply put, it's a mini wardrobe filled with things you love and can mix and match till your hearts conent. It's supposed to save time, money, and sanity. But is it really that
simple?

Perfect or not, it's an interesting idea. Wouldn't planning and buying a new wardrobe every 3 months take an awful lot of effort and shopping?

The current capsule wardrobe trend seems to have a different purpose than Susie Faux's original idea of having a classic style on a limited budget. Something to be aware of in starting your own capsule wardrobe.

Have you tried a capsule wardrobe? How did you approach it and what were the results?
Next week, I'll look at how to start a capsule wardrobe.
